Hospital redevelopment plans released
- Proposal to redevelop former Shenton Park hospital site
- Improvement scheme released for public consultation
The redevelopment of the former Shenton Park hospital site is a step closer with the State Government today releasing proposed plans for public comment.
Lands Minister Terry Redman said the 15.8 hectare site of the former hospital, which was decommissioned in 2014, would become home to a residential community, following extensive stakeholder engagement over the last 18 months.
Two portions of land will also be leased to the Leukaemia Foundation and Multiple Sclerosis Society to develop new patient accommodation facilities.
“Projections show that by 2050, Perth’s population will reach 3.5 million people and the State Government is working hard to ensure the availability of land for jobs and land for current and future West Australians,” Mr Redman said.
“The proposed plans for the development reflect the culture, history and existing landscape of the site, while providing for a range of modern housing options that will also attract new residents to the area.
“The allocation of land for accommodation facilities for the Leukaemia Foundation and the Multiple Sclerosis Society will provide a much needed ‘home away from home’ for patients who often travel some distance to access the medical care they need in Perth.”
Planning Minister John Day said the draft Shenton Park Hospital Redevelopment Improvement Scheme would guide development of the 15.8 hectare urban village.
“The scheme will ensure the co-ordinated development of this new urban community including high-quality design, land use, public amenity, essential services and private sector investment,” Mr Day said.
“The site’s proximity to well serviced public transport links, including the Shenton Park train station, make it an ideal location for appropriate density. A development of this type will go a long way to accommodating our growing population while providing people with housing diversity and choice.
“The improvement scheme, which includes the structure plan and design guidelines, is an important planning document and I encourage everyone to have their say.”
