Improved pedestrian-cycling safety at Gateway

  • $17.6 million of shared paths at Gateway WA near the airport
  • The new network will include one footbridge and seven underpasses

Improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians are being delivered through Gateway WA with the State Government building 21 kilometres of shared cycling and pedestrian paths as part of the $1 billion joint Federal-State project.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the State Government was determined to create an integrated transport system which gave West Australians a choice of transport options.

The new paths, including four kilometres of local connections, are now being installed along:

  • Tonkin Highway from Victoria Street to the Roe Highway interchange
  • Leach Highway from Jeffrey Street to the Tonkin Highway interchange
  • Roe Highway from the Tonkin Highway interchange to Berkshire Road.

“It’s our commitment that whenever we build a major new road or rail link that we will include cycling facilities.  It’s part of Perth’s culture for people to ride for commuting purposes, exercise or leisure. So on major transport projects like Gateway WA, you will find cycling infrastructure installed as an important part of the project,” Mr Nalder said.

“Since 2011, we’ve seen the number of cyclists using our paths increase by 32 per cent.  That is not only good for health, but it takes cars off our roads and improves traffic flow.”

While there will be some disruption to existing walking and cycling paths during construction, the new paths will provide improved access for the public along the new road alignment.

The majority of the shared paths will be open by late 2015.

Fact File

  • Over the past six years, the State Government has invested $106.1 million in cycling networks throughout WA, resulting in 221 kilometres of off-road shared paths and 71 kilometres of on-road bike lanes
  • A principal shared path is a high standard shared path covering access all throughout the road network for use by pedestrians and cyclists
