One step closer to bringing the river to the city
Earlier this week the bund was removed at Elizabeth Quay allowing water from the Swan River to flow into the inlet for the very first time.
MRA CEO Kieran Kinsella said that Elizabeth Quay has always been about bringing our city and river together again, designed as a place to make the most of our beautiful Swan River.
Onsite crews have been working over the past week to excavate the area south-east of the island creating a new channel for the water move freely between the inlet and the river.
MR Kinsella said Elizabeth Quay was on budget, and that the public realm and inlet will open by Christmas 2015.
“I think the people of Perth can start looking forward to an exciting summer at Elizabeth Quay whether it be taking the kids the BHP Billiton Water Park or having a coffee strolling along the promenades and enjoying the view across the inlet,”
Mr Kinsella said the overall delivery programme was progressing rapidly with planning for the opening of the public realm well underway.
“Paving of the promenades and The Landing is about 40 percent complete, these spaces will soon host an exciting array of events and activities and offer a variety of popup food and beverage vendors.”
Mr Kinsella said that Elizabeth Quay would not reveal itself in just one day and that a series of milestone events would be planned throughout the summer months.
“Plans are underway for a family friendly community event to mark the opening of the public realm, we will then see a series of summer events to celebrate as more features of Elizabeth Quay become accessible to the community.”
