[Perth] World-class Perth Busport opens

The $217m Perth Busport officially opened today. The new Perth Busport offers new level of passenger comfort and dynamic stand management system.

The official opening of the $217 million Perth Busport is the latest significant milestone in the Liberal National Government’s delivery of transformational transport projects in Western Australia.

Premier Colin Barnett said the world-class asset, which would start operating on Sunday, July, 17, would revolutionise Perth’s transport network.

“The landmark underground Perth Busport, with its airport-style interior and dynamic stand management system, will significantly benefit the millions of commuters who use our city’s integrated transport system each year,” Mr Barnett said.

“This project is transforming public transport across the metropolitan area, as well as the CBD landscape, by reconnecting the inner city with Northbridge for the first time in 100 years.”

The Premier said the busport was the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the State Government’s innovative Perth City Link project, which started with the sinking of the Fremantle Line in 2013 and demolition of the Wellington Street Bus Station in 2014.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the Perth Busport was designed and built to manage Perth’s public transport demands for at least the next 30 years and beyond.

“In the 2014-15 financial year, there were more than 84 million boardings on Transperth buses, the largest of any mode of public transport,” Mr Nalder said.

“Each week day, about 1,400 buses will travel through the facility and there will be about 28,000 passenger movements, which is expected to increase to 38,500 by 2031. “The state-of-the-art facility will enable 50 per cent more buses to use it than the old Wellington Street facility.”

Perth Busport features two bus entrances – from Milligan Street near the Perth Arena and Wellington Street – as well as three passenger entry and exit points from ground level at Yagan Square and Queen and King streets.

All services from Roe Street Bus Station will move to Perth Busport on July 17, 2016.

A public open day will be held this Saturday, July 16 from 12pm to 3pm.
