Rod Laver Arena Upgrade To Secure The Biggest And Best Events
The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with the job of upgrading Rod Laver Arena to ensure the Melbourne icon retains its status as one of the world’s leading sports and entertainment venues.
The second phase of a $700 million transformation at the home of the Australian Open is about to begin. The Major Projects Victoria refurbishment will shore up Victoria’s position as an events hot spot, strengthen our title as the sporting capital of the world, and create up to 1300 jobs in the construction phase.
Today, Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren announced the building contractors selected to tender for construction. The contract will be awarded by October, with works planned to begin after the 2016 Grand Slam.
The building contractors shortlisted are:
- Brookfield Multiplex Constructions Pty Ltd
- Built Pty Ltd
- Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd
- Lend Lease Building Contractors Pty Ltd
Plans include a newly-designed southern annex to become the main entrance to the arena. A more efficient loading bay will mean shows can bump in and out faster, ensuring Rod Laver Arena can host the biggest acts in the world.
Improved eateries will offer diners a wider variety of options and new outlets at floor level will mean guests no longer have to go back to the concourse to buy food and drinks.
Melbourne Park stages more than 200 events every year. The Labor Government is making sure Rod Laver Arena continues to host the biggest blockbuster sporting and entertainment events in the world.
